Occasionally you may hear me talk about NAT type when talking about online play for a game. This is because I use a wireless connection to play online. Here’s a quick bit about what this means:
NAT comes in three types. What it means isn’t really important. Type 1 you can only get with a wired connection, and it’s the best, allowing full online activity.
Type 2 is as good as it gets for wireless users. Luckily, it gets the job done.
Type 3 will get the job done for many games, and is very easily what you have if you have a wireless connection. On a Playstation, this can be checked from the Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Status on the XMB. Games like LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted 2, and Red Dead Redemption for example, will very likely NOT FUNCTION online with a NAT 3 connection.
You don’t have to be a computer whiz to figure out how to fix this problem. I contacted Sony about it once and they sent me to this wonderful site which has a comprehensive list of routers and a database of the ports required to forward in order to make one game or another work to its highest capability. If you’re having issues, check it out.
