Quick Hit: Far Cry 2

I picked this one up for a few days to give it a play. It wasn’t really thorough by any means, so I’m labeling this a quick hit – thought from a couple hours play rather than all the way through. You might want to get a second opinion just in case.
Platform: PS3*/Xbox 360/PC
Genre: FPS
Players: 1 (Online: 16)
ESRB: Mature (Blood, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Strong Language, Sexual Themes)

Far Cry 2 was not one of the more enjoyable experiences I’ve had playing a video game. We’ll keep it short.

The map is bulky. While it’s sort of nice that you can pull it out and continue moving, you quickly realize why other games simply pause the action. It’s in the way.

The gun play is so-so. It’s pretty loose and inaccurate.

I’ve never been so annoyed by an open-world format. Coming from a guy who loves Fallout, the combination of pure FPS and open-world format doesn’t work well. Open-world works well for RPGs because there is an element of exploration and interaction with people. Far Cry puts you in a world where everyone (and I mean everyone) is an enemy. There are checkpoints if you want to go anywhere where you’ll get shot up, and it gets annoying fast. The fast travel system is by bus which really doesn’t get very accurate so you’ll still end up doing a lot of shooting on your travels.

As far as plot goes, it seemed like it was headed in a good direction. Like I said, didn’t get through it, so I can’t tell you a whole lot, but if there was a redeeming quality, I’d bet that that’s it, because the game play left me pretty unimpressed.

Bottom Line: 6/10
